Adverse effects of burrs

The burrs on mechanical parts are caused by plastic deformation during cutting, some are caused by flashing of castings and die forgings, some are caused by materials extruded from welding, etc. With the improvement of industrialization and automation, the accuracy requirements of parts are becoming higher and higher. If the burrs are not removed, it will cause many adverse effects.

 

For example precision parts for automobiles, refrigeration compressors, airplanes, etc. If you do not remove the burrs, the consequences are unimaginable. The burr or metal powder on the parts, once entering the hydraulic or pneumatic system, will cause serious turbulence or non-laminar flow, which will block the filter or the tube. In the mechanical transmission system, due to vibration, the burr will fall off, causing the system to be stuck or parts damaged. Sometimes, the burr directly interferes with the mechanical movement of the component, which is particularly noticeable for pistons or slide valves.

 

During the cutting process, if the burr is placed on the positioning base surface of the part, it will not be a real base surface contact after clamping, and it will become a point contact, which seriously affects the machining accuracy. The same is true during assembly, due to the presence of burrs, which causes assembly failure. If the parts do not remove burrs, they are unqualified when loading or unloading the workpiece on the machine tool or during assembly. If the parts do not remove burrs, the worker’s hand will be scratched when loading or unloading the workpiece on the machine tool or during assembly. When subjected to higher loads, burrs and sharp edges affect the fatigue strength of parts and the bonding force with paint and other protective layers, reducing the service life of parts. Larger burrs also affect the appearance quality of the part. In short, the existence of these residual burrs is harmless and not beneficial.
